In December 2023, Wheeler Business Consulting LLC conducted its eighth annual industry-wide compensation and production survey of originators. A total of 110 individuals participated in the survey. The sample group was made up of 38% bank originators, 45% originators from independent finance and leasing companies, and 17% from syndication/broker companies. The survey included 22% of originators with less than 5 years of experience, 20% of originators with 5 to 10 years of experience, and 58% with 10 years or more of experience. The survey consisted of 71 small ticket originators, 26% middle market originators and 3% large ticket originators. The survey confirmed that the commercial equipment leasing and finance industry remains a lucrative opportunity for originators with 51% of originators indicating incomes above $200.0K in 2023 (28% above $300.0K in 2023)
Originators' Compensation Originator's incomes above $200.0K increase from 48.6% in 2022 to 51.4% in 2023. Lower level compensations ( below $1250K) decreased in the industry by 8.7% in 2023 compare to 2022.
Originators' Production Production also remained strong for originators with 63.6% of originators producing in excess of $10.0M in 2023. It is notable that originators producing in excess of $35.0M decreased by 5% in 2023 over 2022. Lower-level productions of less than $5.0M continue to decrease year over year with only 15% of originators producing less than $5.0M.
